American camera retail barely has chains any more. Of the 406 camera businesses in this directory, just 28 are branches of a multi-location banner — 93.1% are independents. That isn't an accident of our data. It's what's left after the two collapses below.
Why there are so few chains left
Ritz Camera and Wolf Camera were once the default camera store in an American mall — the combined operation peaked at more than 800 stores. It went through bankruptcy and was liquidated in 2012, taking the country's biggest specialty photo chain off the map in a single stroke.
Calumet Photographic was the professional's counterpart — the shop working photographers bought lighting and medium format from. In March 2014 it filed Chapter 7 and closed every US store overnight, without warning, leaving customers with orders and repairs behind locked doors.
The businesses that came through were the ones nobody was rolling up: family shops with one or two locations, a repair bench, a rental counter and enough local reputation to survive the smartphone. When you search for a camera repair shop today you are overwhelmingly searching for an independent — which is why this directory is mostly geography, not banners.

Some of the largest photo retailers in the country run a single walk-in store and do the rest by mail order — B&H and Adorama each famously operate one Manhattan shop. These banners have one location in this directory.
Chain or independent — which should you actually use?
For a current body from a major manufacturer the practical difference is small: both can be authorized dealers, and the brand pages show who is. Chains tend to hold deeper stock across more product lines and can move inventory between branches.
For everything else — a repair, an unusual film stock, a fair price on a used lens, someone who will actually look at your gear across the counter — the independents are the reason this industry still exists. Start with camera repair, film & vintage repair or mail-in repair.
